Process of Medical Abortion
First Step
The First Consultation for an Abortion
The abortion process begins with an interview to create your medical file with all your medical history and verify that there are no contraindications to terminating the pregnancy.
Then, I perform an ultrasound to determine the start date of the pregnancy.
We then discuss your decision to terminate the pregnancy. This is a very important part of the consultation. The goal is not to convince me but to ensure that you are sure of your decision. If you have doubts, I suggest taking time to reflect.
I explain the available options (medical or surgical abortion depending on the age of the pregnancy and your choice).
I offer a psychosocial interview (mandatory for minors) with a family counselor or psychologist.
I prepare the necessary documents (consent form, prescription, information regarding abortion: abortion guide...).
I need to know your blood type. If you don't know it, I will prescribe a blood test to be done the same day.
If you choose a medical abortion (specialty of the Beausoleil abortion center serving Nice, Monaco & Menton), I explain the procedure for a medical abortion (see below).
I give you an appointment for a follow-up after the medical abortion, approximately two weeks later. This appointment is essential.
For minor patients, it is advisable to bring the consent of a parental authority representative. If you wish to keep it confidential, you must be accompanied by an adult of your choice.
Second Step
The Abortion Follow-up Consultation
It is scheduled approximately two weeks after the first consultation.
You explain how your abortion went.
I perform a follow-up ultrasound to ensure everything went well.
We discuss contraception (I recommend seeing your regular gynecologist).
If needed, I offer psychological support.
If you wish, we review your gynecological follow-up: Screening (Pap smear, mammogram...) and Sexually Transmitted Infections (possible tests).
Key Points to Remember for Medical Abortion Planning
Medical abortion must be performed within 63 days from the first day of the last period.
There are 2 consultations required for a medical abortion.
